How the AP CSA exam is scored
AP Computer Science A has 40 multiple choice questions (50%) and four free-response Java programming questions scored 0 to 9 each (50%). The free-response questions always follow the same four types: methods and control structures, class design, arrays and ArrayLists, and 2D arrays. Partial credit is generous on the rubrics, so attempting every part matters.

Composite formula
Each section's raw score is turned into a share of the section's weight, and the shares are added. The result is a composite on a 0 to 100 scale, which is the same proportion as the College Board's raw composite for this exam:

+ free response / 36 x 50Put another way, one multiple choice question is worth 1.25 composite points, while one point on the free response questions is worth 1.39. That ratio tells you where an hour of practice moves your score the most.
Estimated AP CSA score cutoffs
Cutoffs vary by year; these are estimates from released exams and practice scoring guides. The College Board equates each exam after it is given and does not publish the current year's cutoffs.

Worked example: the form defaults
The calculator starts at about 70% of the maximum on every part. Here is the full arithmetic for those numbers:

A composite of 68.3 is a 4 under the estimated cutoffs (a 5 starts at 70, so it is 1.7 points short). Holding the free-response scores fixed, 30 multiple choice correct instead of 28 would reach a 5.
Where to gain points on AP CSA
Because the composite is a weighted sum, every raw point has a fixed value, and they are not equal. On this exam a multiple choice question is worth 1.25 composite points and a free response point 1.39, so one extra rubric point there is worth about 1.1 multiple choice questions. Free-response rubrics award points for specific moves (a thesis, a labeled graph, a unit, a justification), so learning what the graders look for usually adds points faster than more content review. On multiple choice, the lack of a guessing penalty means every blank is a wasted chance.
What the score means for college credit
Colleges set their own AP credit policies. Most public universities grant credit or placement for a 3 on AP CSA; many selective private colleges require a 4 or 5, and some grant placement but not credit. The College Board's credit policy search lists each college's rule by exam. Scores stay in your account, and you can withhold or cancel a score before it is sent if you would rather a college not see it.
