How to calculate a tip
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal. An 18% tip on a $50 bill is 50 x 0.18 = $9.00, for a total of $59.00. Splitting between friends means dividing that total by the number of people, and the calculator can round each person's share up so nobody is digging for coins.

Quick reference: 15%, 18%, and 20% tips
Choose a bill amount for the full tip breakdown, totals, and per-person shares.
15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service. 18% is a common middle ground, and 20% or more is typical for excellent service or large groups.
Do I tip on the bill before or after tax?
Etiquette guides say the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference on a $50 bill at 8% sales tax and a 20% tip is 80 cents.
How do I split a bill with tip evenly?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. This calculator does that and can round each share up to the nearest dollar.
What is a quick way to calculate a 20% tip in my head?
Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $43.50 bill, 10% is $4.35 and 20% is $8.70.
